W153/143 engine question

Hi all, making some progress with my W153 engine /in the title mentioned the 143, too, as I think it must be the same/, but have a question about sealing it: on both ends of the cylinder block, there are removable parts - must be removed when taking out or installing the crankshaft. Where these parts contact the block, there is a long hole with some black stick in it - probably to prevent oil leak. I do not know what that black stuff is, it may have been rubber when new, but now it is as hard as wood.  
   So, the question is, how do I seal these two removable parts? Is it Ok to use the old black "sticks", or put rubber instead, or fill the holes with gasket sealant? Thanks!

checking yr pic, it looks to me like the cylinder head dowel pin (there should be two of them), that means, his duty is to assure the correct alignment while the refitting of the head to the engine block.  
 
However, ist the pin of solid steel or is it hollow and slotted???

Sorry I have not described it well - this is the bottom side of the block, not related to the head. The pin is made of composite material - either rubber that has hardened over time, or graphite filling, or some king of Bakelite/textolite. It is there to seal the oil, not to leak from the block.

for that location, I have no idea, either for the function nor for the material they are made of.
 
Check it out with compressed air if the holes in question are blind or inter-connected to the internal eingine lub-oil distribution.  
 
Crosscheck the hole location in the engine block with the original holes in the original gasket (if there is any soft gasket forseen for the joint.)
 
Provide more meaningful photos, showing the overview and than more detailed ones, maybe somebody else have the right valuable input than.

Yes, a more general view is needed, to explain what I mean. Here it is:
 
The red color outlines the place of the removable part. It just closes the cylinder block. Similar part is located on the opposite end of the block, too. Under the red color there is a bright green dash - the hole. Or rather half hole. The other half is in the removable part. The hole has been drilled when the part was in the block. The part fits very tight, but still not oil-tight. The material in the hole is there to seal the oil.

Hello Ted, in my eyes these pins look a lot alike the corresponding parts in my Volvo ED 6-cylinder flathead engine, which has the same construction of the crankshaft oil seal holder. This engine was originally developed in 1929 and built in several versions up to 1957 so it can be considered fairly contemporaneous. The pins, which are made of wood, are forced into the lateral holes with light hammer blows and cut flush with the oil pan flange. By the heat and pressure, they absorb oil and expand to form a tight oil seal. When I restored my engine, I used ordinary pinewood which has kept tight for about 12 years by now. I don't think the type of wood is critical as long as it is not too hard from the beginning.

Thank you very much,  it seems that's exactly wood! While decided not to break /yet/ one, I had a closer look and it seems to have a typical wood structure! Tomorrow I will turn on the lathe some pinewood sticks and that must solve the problem!  Smiley
